What is standard WPM?

Standard (corrected) WPM is the score employers, certification exams and Tapwpm use. It is the only number that reflects real-world productivity because it penalises errors — a typo that needs correcting later is not free work.

Corrected WPM = ((Correct keystrokes / 5) − Errors) ÷ Minutes

Errors are harsh here: each wrong, skipped or extra keystroke first removes itself from the correct tally, then subtracts an additional word unit at the division stage. That's why a 60 WPM typist at 98% accuracy usually beats an 80 WPM typist at 85% accuracy in real work.

What is raw WPM?

Raw WPM uses the same 5-keystroke word convention but ignores errors entirely — every keystroke counts as valid, including typos:

Raw WPM = (Total keystrokes / 5) ÷ Minutes

Raw WPM is almost always higher than corrected WPM, and the gap widens as accuracy drops. Many free typing widgets only show raw WPM, which is why people say their WPM is "80" when certification exams would score them closer to 55.

Use raw WPM only as a speed ceiling reference — it tells you how fast your fingers physically move, not how much usable text you produce.

How accuracy is calculated

Accuracy is the percentage of keystrokes that match the target text exactly. Wrong, skipped and extra inserted characters all count as errors:

Accuracy = (Correct keystrokes ÷ Total keystrokes) × 100
  • Backspaces do not directly count as errors, but the wrong character you backspaced still does.
  • Above 95% is the practical minimum for serious work; 98%+ is the professional target.

Consistency metric explanation

Consistency measures how stable your per-second WPM is across the whole test. It is calculated as one minus the coefficient of variation over rolling windows of a few seconds:

Consistency = 1 − (stddev ÷ mean) over rolling windows
  • 80%+ is good, 90%+ is excellent.
  • Low consistency usually signals weak-key hesitation or fatigue, not a top-speed problem.
  • Improving consistency often lifts corrected WPM more than chasing raw speed, because smoothing removes long pauses.

Why different websites give slightly different WPM results

If you test the same passage on three typing sites and get three different scores, it isn't a bug — providers use slightly different conventions. Knowing them lets you compare scores apples-to-apples.

Word length convention

Some sites use 5-keystroke = 1 word (industry standard). A few older tools use 6 keystrokes or count dictionary words instead, which inflates or deflates scores by ~17%.

Backspace handling

Some sites let you backspace and the corrected keystroke counts as fully correct. Tapwpm penalises the original error but credits the fix, which matches most certification exams.

Counting spaces and punctuation

Tools that exclude spaces give noticeably lower WPM (about 20% of keystrokes are spaces in typical prose). Always check whether your score includes them.

Timer rounding

A 60-second test is straightforward. A 30-second test that ends mid-word can give ±1–2 WPM depending on how the final partial word is handled.

What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

Standard (corrected) WPM penalises errors by subtracting them from the word count before dividing. Raw WPM counts every keystroke including typos, so it is always higher than corrected WPM (except at 100% accuracy, where the two are equal).
