What WPM actually means

WPM stands for Words Per Minute. Because people type different mixes of short and long words, the typing industry normalises "one word" to a fixed unit so scores are comparable across any text passage.

• The standard convention is 5 keystrokes = 1 word — used by Tapwpm and every commercial typing test.
• Keystrokes include letters, digits, punctuation and single spaces — backspaces and modifier keys do not count.
• A 100-character block of typing therefore always equals 20 words regardless of the dictionary words inside.

Different roles demand different typing speeds. The numbers below represent the typical minimum employers expect, with higher accuracy demands for text-critical roles.

Why accuracy matters more than raw WPM

Corrected WPM (the score employers actually use) subtracts errors from the word count before dividing. The math makes every typo expensive: a single missed keystroke first removes itself from the correct tally, then subtracts an additional word unit at the division stage.

• A 60 WPM typist at 98% accuracy usually produces more usable text per hour than an 80 WPM typist at 85% accuracy.
• Every uncorrected mistake reinforces the wrong muscle path, making future speed gains harder.
• Aim for 95%+ accuracy in every drill — speed will follow automatically as the correct paths solidify.
